
The Indiana General Assembly convened for Organization Day on Tuesday, November 22, in the Indianapolis State House. Speaker of the House Brian C. Bosma spoke to the members about how his visit to Haiti influenced his life, their collective aspirations , Hoosier citizen unemployment, taxes, and other vital issues.
The Indiana General Assembly will begin meeting January 4, 2012. The General Assembly will take a break the week before the Super Bowl on February 5 when over 100,000 visitors are expected in Indianapolis. This will be the short session year that is held in even numbered years and must end by March 14. Odd numbered years is the long session that must end by April 29.
The General Assembly was formed when Indiana became a state in 1816 and is composed of the House and the Senate. The House of Representatives has 100 members, each representing one district within the state. Each member of the House of Representatives is elected every two years. The Senate has 50 members, one representing each district. Each member of the Senate is elected every four years with one half of the Senators being elected biennially.
