World-class triathlete: sports and spirituality by Tim Mitchinson for Fit for Life

August 11, 2015 By Sharon Vincz Andrews Leave a Comment

IMG_0534-e1438179978831-225x300Given news reports of drugs and violence among athletes, it would seem that sports and spirituality don’t always go hand-in-hand. The reputation of professional sports teams in Indiana and in other states has taken a hit in recent years because of illegal activities among players. My friend, Tim Mitchinson, writing for the July 29, 2015 edition of Fit for Life, shares the story of a world-class athlete whose spirituality not only helps him succeed in sports and in life, but also brought him through a serious accident with a complete healing. Here’s Tim:

In the over 80 triathlons held in Illinois this year, people of all ages will stretch themselves physically and mentally while running, biking, and swimming alongside their competitors. And an increasing number of racers will also exercise their spirituality in these contests.

One such individual is world-class triathlete Patrick McCreary of Alton, who has just completed his 189th race in 28 years. His workouts are not just physical exercise, but a time of prayer. “Although I train year round and average 6 to 12 races a season, it is my relationship to the divine that keeps getting stronger every year. My training includes thinking of Bible verses and hymns when running, swimming or biking.”

McCreary focuses on three spiritual traits in his training and racing – peace, joy and power. “I don’t know anyone who is not seeking these qualities in their lives,” he told me. These three elements of spirituality could be called a “spiritual triathlon”. McCreary spoke further of the benefits…

Sports and Spirituality: The Boys In The Boat by Cynthia Barnett for The Good Project

August 4, 2015 By Sharon Vincz Andrews Leave a Comment

BA00521-1Ah…The Greatest Generation: World War II era men of integrity, honor, sacrifice, love. How about YOUR generation? Are you seeing honesty and goodness in soldiers, athletes, public officials of your own age? Today’s blog features a “amplified” book review of The Boys in the Boat. While it is about the Greatest Generation, blogger Cynthia Barnett, writing for the July 26, 2015 edition of  The Good Men Project, challenges us to share the example of manhood from this book as a  model for men of all ages. Here’s Cynthia:

With all the recent athletic scandals in the US, Americans want models of integrity. They are tired of the cheating, abuse and sleaze in their teams and standouts and yearn for more honest, admirable athletes. Just in time comes The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, an uplifting, continuously bestselling book about spiritually-minded sportsmen of the Greatest Generation. They can inspire us today.

The Boys in the Boat tells of the famous 1936 Berlin Olympics crew team from Seattle’s University of Washington. This is the crew that shattered records, stereotypes, and Hitler’s hopes for his “Aryan race” to conquer its opponents in Nazi Germany. Beyond a story of mere physical prowess, however, the book highlights the nobility—the spirituality— of this underdog team.

It may not read that way at first. The story details the competitive selection process and the grueling, painful practices in rain, cold and darkness. It dramatizes a sharp rivalry— first between the University of California at Berkeley and the Washington boys—and then the greater rivalry of West Coast novices against the East Coast establishment of Ivy League blue bloods. There is poverty, abandonment and loneliness for oarsman and main character Joe Rantz when his mother dies and a new stepmother convinces the family to exclude him from their home when just a boy. His later childhood and early college years become a tale of endless foster homes, homelessness and just making it on his own…
